Kids’ Days at Wallace
Running clinics that offer high-quality, low-cost care isn’t something you can do alone. As the Medical Director and Dental Director of Wallace, we see the way our teams collaborate to achieve a high standard of care—and we see how investment from our supporters lets us ensure cost is never a barrier to care.
Thanks to the teamwork of our staff—and supporters like you—Wallace is an open door to anyone in need of health care.
We’d like to tell you about a new program at Wallace that is opening that door a little wider.
Starting this spring, we began hosting Kids’ Days. These special clinics bring our medical and dental teams together on Saturdays to provide exams and treatment for our youngest patients. We offer appointments back to back, dental and then medical, like single-stop shopping, all on a weekend.
The need is great. Dental pain is one of the biggest reasons children stay home from school, accounting for millions of lost school hours. Many families delayed doctors’ visits during the pandemic, and their medical needs have accumulated. But simply making it to our clinics for multiple weekday appointments can be a significant hurdle.
Back in medical and dental school, it was a real challenge to make and keep health appointments. Long shifts and sudden schedule changes meant a lot of cancellations and missed appointments. Imagine the scope of the challenge for our patients, who have much greater challenges and demands on their time. Sometimes it’s a job they can’t step away from, sometimes it’s transportation, sometimes it’s cost…. We’ve realized the best we can do to help our patients is do as much as possible in one appointment.
One example comes right to mind: a mother who brought three children with her to a recent Kids’ Day. We did three sets of medical and dental appointments, back to back to back, while she wrangled the other two kids. It was a little frantic at times, but we all did our best to juggle everything and treat her family. Now imagine, what would it look like if she was asked to take time off and arrange transportation for six separate midweek appointments? It would’ve been impossible. There would simply be too many barriers to overcome.
Wallace has been knocking down these barriers to good health for nearly 40 years. Kids’ Days are our latest tool to make care more accessible than ever.
This partnership between medical and dental at Wallace is a reminder we accomplish more when we work together. Will you lend us your support as well by making a year-end gift to Wallace?
